Sligo Yacht Club Fleets
There are 3 different
fleets in Sligo Yacht Club. These are, Cruisers, GP14's and Mirror's. The 3 classes have been at the Club for many years.
There are about 14 boats in the
Cruiser class. All of them vary in
size from 21' right up to 38'. Cruiser racing takes place on Wednesday and Friday
evenings from 6.30 at the pier at Rosses Point, adjacent to the
Lifeboat station. The season lasts from April to late September, after which all boats are
lifted out for the Winter. However, in the future, with the planned marina, this will no longer be the case. Not only will we see cruiser sailing all year round, but also a substantial increase in the cruiser fleet.
Racing between the different class and
size of boat is done on a handicap system so as not to give an unfair
advantage to the bigger or faster boats. The 2 types of handicap are
known as "ECHO" and "IRC" or "Channel",
and both are governed by the Irish Sailing Association.
The GP14 and Mirror fleets race on Tuesday and Thursday, with 1st gun at 7.30 and Sunday at 3.00pm. The Mirror fleet also sails throughout the winter months on Sunday mornings at 11am. There
are 40 GP's and 40 Mirror's in the Club.
